Pets — Preparedness Checklist

Keep your animals safe with a ready-to-go emergency kit

When disaster strikes, your pets need to be part of your emergency plan. The American Red Cross recommends preparing a pet emergency kit so you can act quickly to keep your animals safe.

Suggested Emergency Items

  • Sturdy leash, harness, collar, and/or carrier for safe transport
  • Pet food, water, bowls, and manual can opener
  • Cat litter/pan or dog waste bags
  • Current identification tags
  • Portable pet bed or blanket and toys
  • Pet coat for short haired pets
  • Collapsible crate for secure sleeping space
  • Waterproof copies of medications/medical records
  • Current vaccination records
  • Pet first aid kit
  • Recent photos of you with your pet for identification
  • Feeding schedule, medical conditions, behavior notes, and vet contact info

Be Red Cross Ready

Preparing an emergency kit for your pet in advance means you won't have to scramble when time is short. Review and refresh your pet's kit every year.
